Who did the first frontside 180 heelflip?

Image
This question randomly popped into my head recently. I am genuinely curious who was the first skater to do this and in what video it occurred.  The earliest recollection I have of seeing one is from Rodney Mullen in Plan B's "Questionable" video from 1992. It would be at around the 2:34 mark.  I also recalled being impressed with Lavar McBride doing one over a bike rack in 20 Shot Sequence. This would be at the 1:39 mark in this video. I guess this was later though-1994.  So does Rodney get credit for inventing yet another trick? Or is there an earlier instance of a frontside 180 heelflip on record?? Please comment if you know of one.

Scott Starr Interview

Image
** originally posted this interview a few months ago but there were issues with the formatting of the photos/text so I took it down. I also thought it was a good time to repost it as Scott has been quietly going through some health issues. If you would like to find out more information please go to the link below. http://www.gofundme.com/x3kc92t4 I recently had the chance to touch base with the man behind many iconic skateboarding images. Former Thrasher Magazine staff photographer, skate, snowboard, and freestyle frisbee enthusiast, and all around nice guy, Scott Starr.  (All photos and captions by Scott) Danny Way, not liking his run at a Powell Zone contest and taking it out on his board. Mid '90's I forget the year right now.  How did you get into skate/action sports photography?    Well I was always an artist and in High School designed the Yearbook covers and backdrops for plays and dances, I was always very creative. So when I ...

Don't call it a comeback..because it isn't.

I've been sitting on two half-completed posts for well over a month now. Truth be told it's funner to look at other stuff on the internet then to put the effort into contributing.. But, had to share this recent video of Rodney Mullen and Brian Lotti from 1992 that I stumbled upon the other day. Seeing new footage, even if it's 20 years old, of either one of these two is a rare treat indeed.. Going to get my butt in gear and finish up the skate shoe evolution series soon then move on to other stuff I've been wanting to do for some time. Thanks for your patience..

Freestyle is dead..

Still not sure how a whole genre of a sport can just disappear, but there you go. Always seemed pretty amazing to me but had a certain air of eliteness that made it seem somewhat unnaproachable. And those boards, sheesh. I don't know how anyone was able to do anything on them. Have you ever tried riding one? Rodney Mullen's transformation to street is nothing short of amazing. I heard him refer to it in an interview once saying that he had to get used to rolling when doing his tricks.. (by the way, in case you didn't know, the guy in the inset above is who you're referencing when you say you landed "Primo") Can't forget about this dude.... Correction: the kind folks over at Vert is Dead pointed out that in the 'Toonage post I did recently I wrongly attributed the "Everything Sucks" ad to Lance Mountain, when it was actually Sean Cliver who did the artwork. Sorry about that.

Ever have one of those days where you wake up and go "what the hell was I thinking?".. Yeah, well I had one last week and realized that the puke green back ground on here was horrid. Kind of reminds me of President Skroob in Spaceballs ; Anyway, good week in skateboarding. Mullen does a Ted talk; Gino gets his own truck; and Arto gets Epicly Later'd ; Oh yeah, there's also the Battle at the Berrics five finals this weekend.. should be interesting.. Anywho, I'll do some more scans next week. Just too much going to to sit down and focus on one thing. Have a great weekend!
