Black History Month in Skateboarding (Leftovers)

Image
So February came and went. I only thought to focus on skaters for Black History Month partway through the month, and quickly realized that it would be quite a Herculean task. I also had a moral dilemma about the whole thing. Is it cool to single out skaters based on their race? I always thought of skating as being an equalizer in terms of if you got skills on the board, it doesn't matter what color your skin is. But that's just my experience... Ron Chatman, back in the early 90's, and again in 2011.  One of my heroes, Ron Allen. Was at a Demo/Contest at the same time as him recently and just missed him by a hair. Would love to do an interview..  Couple Jovontae Turner flicks. Eric Britton  Can't leave out Sal! Stevie Williams with a massive frontside noseslide..

Left this out from the previous sequences post..  ...still boggles the mind to think about a Jovontae Turner Video Days part...

Top Ten Skate Video Songs..

Image
I've been thinking about this for a long time. A good song in a skate video can make all the difference in the world. Here are (in no particular order) my top ten... 1. Guy Mariano, Mouse. I really don't even need to say why... Those first few notes of the song were so eerie that it just draws you right in. The song seems to get more complicated as the skating gets gnarlier. Classic. 2. Ronnie Creager, Trilogy. One of my all time favorites. Clean song that just seemed to match his skating perfectly. The Jimmy Cliff 2nd song was a surprise that was a little bit more upbeat and worked as well. 3. Pat Duffy, Questionable. Another song that kind of builds with the intensity of the skating and ends with the blood-curling scream from Les Claypool as Pat changes street skating forever.. 4. Danny Way, Virtual Reality. If memory serves me correctly this was right before his surfing accident which took him out of the game for a while. 5. Jamie Thomas, Welcom...

I realized that I had a couple of things scanned that I had not put up yet so here you go. Just an old Jovontae Turner Thunder ad I came across. I had an idea to do a whole post on Daniel Harold Sturt which is why I've had so many black and white photos on here but couldn't find any photos that I felt did him justice. There's got to be a website out there or a book on this guy. If not, there should be. I also liked this ad for the Carroll photo in the bottom right. And before I forget, just watched this Supra tour video and was so stoked on all the legends in there. Penny, Muska, Stevie, Boulala (although I'm not sure what tricks he does). Super inspiring.
